In which situations is coaching particularly helpful?

The promise of (good) coaching is that you can get individual help during times of serious and unsettling professional challenges:

  • Changes in the working conditions and role requirements. Such changes may result e.g. from organizational restructuring, mergers, new processes, new products, new technologies, changed corporate policy, promotion, new leadership, transfer, termination, or job change.
  • Critical situations and conflicts. Such situations may arise from poor communication and cooperation in a team contex, or with individual employees or customers, acute or deadlocked conflicts between executives or units, communication and cooperation problems with one’s supervisor or across several hierarchichal levels.
  • Questions of personal development. Such questions include all concerns in which the coachee wants to learn a new behavior or change an attitude. The trigger may be changed conditions or conflicts, but the focus is on the desire for personal development, for example in complex decision-making processes, upcoming career decisions, professional reorientation or preparation for retirement, psychological or physical symptoms of excessive demands, overwork, and loss of meaning and motivation.

How is the coaching process structured?

The coaching process is limited in time and will be evaluated after an agreed deadline. Basically, the coaching discussions are based on a process in four phases:

  • Find contact and create orientation
  • Outline situation and goals
  • Develop solutions
  • Secure transfer

First of all, I would like to know what is to be achieved through the coaching and what the client wants to measure the success of this measure. Then I’m interested in who else has expectations of the coaching and judges the success.

A coaching session usually takes one hour. Unless otherwise agreed, you don’t need to prepare anything for the first session. In our conversations, I will be mainly listening and asking questions. If there will be one or more follow-up sessions, I will give you a „homework“ for the next session.

Will the content of our communications remain confidential?

Yes – your identity and anything we talk about will remain strictly between you and me.

Since I also have a coach to help me deal with professional challenges, I may relate some information about my work with clients to him. This will exclude, however, any information that might reveal your identity.

What is the difference between coaching and consulting

Consulting is an interaction where the role of the consultant can vary from careful listening to selling a specific solution and even diagnosing the problem to be addressed. The consultant also usually relates to more than one person, i.e. a team, department or board. Coaching by contrast emphasizes that the coach steers a one-on-one dialogue by listening actively and posing the right questions.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching is not therapy. I regularly use methods which are also used in therapy (e.g. role reversal, inner dialogue). The purpose of therapy is in the treatment of illness and restoring of health. Coaching, on the other hand, aims to clarify goals, roles, actions steps, etc.
